BE A DOER AND SET AN ENERGY USE REDUCTION GOAL!
Uh oh! Did you calculate your watt usage in the energy use calculator and determine your impact on the environment? Who knew a couple light switches were so evil? Are you surprised? Question is...WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? You can change your habits and reduce wasteful consumption.
CHECK YOUR ELECTRIC BILL; DECIDE TO REDUCE YOUR WATTS; USE THE MONEY YOU SAVE FOR YOUR COLLEGE FUND...OR ICE CREAM
UH OH! Did you enter your watts in the energy use calculator below and find that your impact on the environment is causing perfectly healthy birds to fall out of the sky? YIKES! Who knew leaving on a few lights, lamps, fans and cell phone plugs plugged in could sequester trees from the rainforest? But you can still do something about it. Come up with an energy use reduction plan for your home/school/building.
1. HOME: Unplug all appliances when not being used. "Phantom Energy" is energy used by appliances that are plugged in but not being used like toasters, coffee pots and cell phones, amongst several others.
2. SCHOOL: Ever drive by your school at night or on the weekends and see the library lights on, or half the hallway lights on? Meet with your custodial staff to come up with a plan to reduce energy waste when building is not in use. Host Half-Watt Wednesdays, and use only half the lights in the classroom. Start a Watt-Watchers program and leave friendly reminders to teachers who left their lights on when they left the room.
3. COMMERICAL BUILDINGS: Retrofitting lights can reduce your building's energy use by 20%!!! Install motion sensor lighting with timers that turn off the lights when no movement has been detected for several minutes.
